From the Aramaic for 'son of Tolmai'. Saint Bartholomew the Apostle was one of the twelve disciples of Christ, traditionally identified with Nathanael. He is venerated for his missionary work across Asia Minor, Armenia, and India, where he is said to have been martyred by flaying.
